Dutty Boukman aka Dutty Bookman deserves to be among other Jamaican heroes like Marcus Garvey and Nanny of the Maroons.  Even though his greatest heroics took place in the neighboring Haiti,it all started in Jamaica and he is a son of Jamaica.  Dutty Boukman's heroics put the fear it the hearts of slave owners that lead to the abolishment of slavery in the Caribbean, North America and all over this world.  So this son of Jamaica is the park for the greatest emancipation in the history of the world and Jamaica should treat him as such.

Dutty Bookman was an educated Maroon who thought other Maroons and enslaved people in Jamaica to read.  The British saw his education level and him educating other Africans as a severe threat and sold him to a French plantation in Haiti.  It was at this point that Bookman's name got changed to Boukman.

While in Haiti, Dutty Boukman continued to teach other enslaved people to read as well as instruct in closely guarded Vodou lore. But his fame would come in August 14, 1791 at the Bwa Kayman ceremony. Boukman was the leading Vodou Priest and called for sacrifice and slave rebellion. The Petro Lwa family was born from these rituals and from the Haitian Revolution itself. Only eight days later, on August 22, the rebellion began in the Haitian mountains in the north. Boukman was quickly captured and beheaded, but the Revolution had started and would lead to Haiti becoming the first independent Republic of Haiti.

Dutty Boukman is already honored in Haiti but he also need to be honored in the land of his birth, Jamaica.
