TRAIN PLATFORM SAFETY AT FLEMINGTON BRIDGE STATION

The issue

The platform at Flemington Bridge Train Station is the most treacherous platform in Melbourne for embarking and disembarking passengers. When northbound trains stop at this station and the doors open, the gap between carriage door and platform is dangerously wide at 330mm. The gap is so wide that one needs to consciously leap to disembark. It is so wide that a large adult could easily slip between carriage and train. The gap is so wide that a mother holding a child could fall through to the tracks below, and it is so wide that it is difficult for parents to manoeuvre a pram onto and off the train. It is risky for anyone with crutches or a disability to board the train safely. The curve of the platform makes it impossible for passengers to signal to the driver when there is a problem with those who are slow to embark or disembark (such as the elderly or those with prams).

This station is a fatality waiting to happen.

Flemington Bridge station services some of the most marginalised people in our society who need to use public transport on a daily basis. Many are from migrant backgrounds. Their children travel to school from this station every day. Their safety is gravely compromised.
