Housing shortage in New Zealand

The issue

New Zealand is facing a housing crisis at the moment,  House prices are incredibly high which makes it more difficult for Kiwi to afford a house and there is a huge difference between demand and supply. Today house prices can be six to eight times more expensive than the median household income. The government supposed to allocate $3.8 billion toward housing due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, we want the government to take concrete action in increasing the supply of houses so that more houses can be build to meet up with the growing demand in New Zealand.

Furthermore, people living in the socio-economically deprived areas, and Maori and Pacific people, are among the groups that are particularly vulnerable. The government needs to think strategically about the housing system so that they can ensure all of their people can have affordable homes and New Zealand is falling behind other countries because we have the least affordable housing markets in the world. The New Zealand housing market isn't functioning as efficiently as it should. According to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, more housing supply is the best solution for the rising house price because if there are more houses available in the market then houses will not be in such high demand which means house price will decrease overtime until it reach an affordabe rate.

According to StatsNZ, the homeownership rate in New Zealand is at the lowest level and homelessness is on the rise. At the moment homeownership for people aged 25 to 29 years has dropped to 44 percent compared to 61 percent in 1990 and families are forced to live in overcrowded houses.
