The stage show of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London's West End at the Palace Theatre started this summer. Many fans flocked the red carpet and many more camped outside bookstores for the release of this much anticipated play. However, even with the release of 250,000 extra tickets and a pot-luck of 40 every Friday, fans all over the world are left out of this global phenomena.
Although talk of the show expanding in future years lines the air, the truth remains uncertain. Even with the additional shows, it's not the same as where the magic started. All of the interviews and behind the scenes coming out the fans have realised that we don't just want another production, we need the original. The stage production and cast that just makes it incredible, from the orchestra to the set designers to the lighting and special effects. This cast just has amazing chemistry on stage and off. They don't just play friends and family, but they are friends and family.
J.K.Rowling and the whole crew/cast of the Cursed Child know how much this means to fans universally. We, the fans, have followed this production since the day it was announced. Many of us have updated our twitter every few minutes waiting for the casting to be revealed. We have taken the actors/crew/writers into our hearts and we don't want to let it go.
I took to tumblr in hope for an rough estimate at how many people wanted this and the result was overwhelming. This showed me that this idea would work, there is a market available and the Potter universe will always deliver. The idea; a recording of the stage show sold on DVD accessible to everyone in every corner of the wizarding world and beyond.
Whilst asking tumblr, I was contacted by many people who showed their support. One, even went as far as telling me her thoughts on the current predicament. She wrote, 'It's really upsetting that so many people are unable to see the play, one of the appeals of Harry Potter was that anyone could experience the magic, we seem to have lost that now.' The complete and utter truth within this statement hit me hard. Harry Potter started as an idea by a brilliant woman who just hadn't been discovered yet. From there, it grew. It grew from a green eyed, black haired boy with spectacles to a eight fantastic books, with other stories (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) weaving their way into the wizarding universe. It became nine films, a stage show, the best-selling book series of all time and was translated into seventy three different languages.
The story of the Boy who Lived was accessible to everyone, why isn't this one? Why can't this one be? I said to her, 'don't give up hope on the world just yet', was this the wrong answer? I don't think so. I don't think any Potter fan, or J.K.Rowling herself, is quite ready to give up this world. If it's to watch once a month or once a day, this DVD would mean so much to so many people - their letter to Hogwarts to see the next generation learn and live; an invite to the quite frankly ridiculous adventures of Albus and Scorpius and the reveal of how time and a parent's love can bring together old enemies.
More importantly it would allow the book to be brought to life and not just be stage directions, to learn about this whole other world of entertainment and inspire our next generation to learn and live, through theatre and friendship.
