Why this petition matters

Started by ANNETTE THOMPSON

Hi,

My name is Annette Thompson and I am writing on behalf of my fiancé Deshanta Young, Henry Brisbon, Enrique Torres, Brian Hargarten, Alonzo Franklin, Brian Walker, Jeffery Mitchell, and others. These men are currently in administrative detention at Lawrence Correctional Center.

Uptown People Law Center (UPLC) currently has a class action lawsuit challenging Illinois segregation policies and practices (Davis v. Jeffries).

Administrative detention also known as restrictive housing in ILDOC is inhuman for many different reason, I will name a few:

- They are isolated in their cells for some days 24 hours a day. According to the public health department, "mental and physical health are interconnected. Social isolation's adverse health consequences range from sleeplessness to reduce immune function. Loneliness is associated with higher anxiety, depression, and suicide rates.

- it's torture. The use of torture destroys people, corrodes the rule of law, undermines the criminal justice system and erodes public trust in public institutions and the state they represent.

- The playbook for who can ultimately who gets AD/RH is flawed. There was a time when they allowed their counselor into these board meeting to advocate for the inmate but they stopped it. Why? Who are advocating for the voiceless. These men has been in AD for 5,10, 25 plus years. This is ridiculous. Where is the justice in this?

As a concerned loved one, I ask that you look into this matter and get rid of or at the very least limit the amount of time one could be isolated.
