Move Helium (He) to the Right of Hydrogen (H) on the Periodic Table
The Issue
It makes sense. Helium needs to kept in the first period because of its one electron layer, and theoretically, it should be in the second group since it has two valence electrons. The naming system even fits with all noble gasses ending in "-on", excluding helium; and helium fitting with the second group's "-um" endings. Hydrogen is an exclusion to the metalloid dividing line, so why did we make an exception to the exception? If it would satisfy you to mark helium as a noble gas by putting another thick line between it, hydrogen, and beryllium, that is totally good. Please sign this petition to tell IUPAC that the people and chemists of the world want to put helium in its rightful place!
