It's time to BAN the Fitnessgram PACER tests.
The Issue
The nation's future, its youth, and its pride go to a building filled with curiosity and wisdom nearly every day to help enhance their academic knowledge and language. It's a place where they get to connect with people of their ages and types. A place where they can foster years and lifelong's worth of relationships. All located in a country famously known for its global recognition, culture, diversity, and its national power. Furthermore, the American public education is truly one of its kind and is unlike any other nation existing on Earth. But how exactly is the American public education so unique? What makes it so integral that it is such an impact on the world?
There are many differences America's education system has. For instance, the hideous looking and rubbish-tasting school lunches (this is where the tax dollars go, people), lack of funding in financially struggling regions, kids being exposed to bad language at very young ages, and the infamous school shootings. Don't even forget the damned common core standards that are behind when it comes to worldwide education ranking. However, among the good, the bad, and the ugly, one thing that is especially an issue in the United States is the practice of assessing students' physical stamina with the use of PACER tests.
But what exactly is a PACER test? According to nova.edu, "Students run back and forth across a 20-meter space at a pace that gets faster each minute. A point is scored for each 20-meter distance covered. The test is easier in the beginning but progressively gets more difficult." To simplify, basically a PACER test is a test where you run laps nonstop until you physically kill yourself.
These tests are completely useless and are anxiety-filled. This only causes more energy wasted by the students. There is no need to measure how many laps a person can run, and this does not have any purpose for our future. Based on discussions I had with others, students in our school have complained about the uselessness of this test and we have demanded that such tests should not be administered in our school and throughout the country. Many people, including those online, also disagree with the use and administration of PACER tests. PACER tests have been controversial since many people debate whether PACER tests should be banned. Teachers have also said "the test is a burden to the school curriculum" Although there were rumors of the test being banned, it is still administered in the states, meaning no answer has arrived yet. Thus, I want to be the one who brings back the attention, to end this test of insanity and uselessness, and to make a beneficial contribution to the flaws of the education system—will you join me and sign the petition?
