India's Support to the United Nation mandate on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

The Issue

“History owes an apology to the members of the LGBT community and their families for the delay in providing redressal for the "ignominy" and "ostracism" they have faced through the centuries.” – Justice Indu Malhotra.

India’s judiciary has shown that it does not discriminate with its two most important judgements. The NALSA judgement in 2014made us rethink of gender and demolish the binaries in which gender identity is conceived and discussed. Further the verdict on Section 377 decriminalized homosexuality, thus paving a way for an Inclusive Society that is ready to accept the various Sexual Orientation and gender Identities.

On the 11th and 12th July 2019 India will get an opportunity to demonstrate its leadership and stand up and show that it is truly believes in Inclusivity. India, as a member of the Human Rights Council will be asked to vote on a resolution moved by Latin American states, which seeks to renew the mandate of the first UN Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI).

Earlier when a similar resolution was introduced in the United Nations - India abstained on 11 of the 17 votes and voted with hostile nations to introduce six amendments with the sole intent of subverting the purpose of the resolution. Today, as a nation we support the LGBT+ community and this is the right time to show that we are leaders that can set examples.

Sign my petition urging Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam to vote in favour of the resolution on the July 11, 2019 and demonstrate that India stands for Inclusivity and extends their support to the LGBTQ+ Community in India and globally.

India has seen some bold decisions under Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,Join me in asking our leaders to lead an example globally and support the LGBT+ community.India’s Vote Matters!

The Decision Makers

MP, Nationalist Congress Party
Responded
Dear citizens, I truly believe in the Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by United Nations that begins with - ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights’. Each individual deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. Being a part of the LGBT Community doesn’t make one less human. Queer Rights are human rights and human rights are Queer Rights. No matter who you are, what your orientation is or what gender you identify as - you deserve to be valued and loved for who you are. I have always called for the country to pledge to include the members of the LGBT community in the mainstream and end discrimination against them. At this crucial juncture of the vote at the UNHRC, I request Hon'ble Prime Minister of India to vote progressively in support of the LGBT Community as the SOGI resolution comes for vote. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has decriminalised Section 377 and it is now time for India to upheld the LGBT rights. Supriya Sule, Member of Parliament, Baramati

Responded
About 8% of India’s population – 104 million individuals belong to the LGBT Community in India. True progress comes from being willing to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. We need to ask ourselves, "How would it feel to be discriminated against for something about myself that I cannot change?” This challenge applies to all of us as we reflect upon deeply held beliefs, as we work to embrace tolerance and respect for the dignity of all persons. To the LGBT men and women worldwide, let me say this: Wherever you live and whatever the circumstances of your life, whether you are connected to a network of support or feel isolated and vulnerable, please know that you are not alone. People around the globe are working hard to support you and to bring an end to the injustices and dangers you face. I have signed this petition urging Modi Ji to vote in favour of SOGI resolution at UN. Please Sign this petition that pushes for dignity for all.
