It’s Time For: GLOBAL AI REGULATION NOW
The issue
Let me first orient you to my position. Two things can be true at once - Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool and require regulations to slow down unchecked progress. I use AI, but the progress of development signals serious warning alarms.
AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace, transforming every corner of our daily lives. However, there is a looming risk that this relentless progress could pose existential threats to humanity. We need to demand immediate action.
In Australia and worldwide, AI systems are becoming increasingly capable of making autonomous decisions without human intervention. We have witnessed instances where rogue AI systems independently executed tasks, sometimes evading human oversight. This phenomenon is just a precursor to a much larger problem. As AI systems continue to evolve, they will engage in recursive self-improvement, enhancing themselves beyond our control…a reality only months away if left unchecked.
This petition calls on Australian politicians to prioritize the regulation of AI domestically and to engage in robust international cooperation to establish global AI regulations. By forging alliances with countries like the United States, China, and other leading technological nations, we can create comprehensive frameworks to govern the development and deployment of AI responsibly.
Why Australia? I’m Australian and I won’t sit around and wait for someone else to do something about this problem. As a psychologist, I have many other concerns around the continued progression of AI and Australia has both the capacity and responsibility to lead initiatives promoting ethical AI. If we act now, we can ensure that AI serves humanity, enhances our quality of life, respects human rights, and mitigates risks that threaten our global community.
There is no time to waste. Immediate steps are needed to bring Australia to the table as a leading advocate for global AI regulation. We need legislative measures to ensure safety standards, promote transparency, and create accountability structures for AI systems. Only by doing so can we safeguard our future and prevent the misuse or unintended consequences of AI technologies.
Join us to send a powerful message to our leaders. Demand they act swiftly to create comprehensive regulations and collaborate globally. Sign this petition, and be a part of the movement to secure a safer future for Australia and the world.
