It's time for Amazon to use recyclable packaging in Canada + collect their plastic waste
The Issue
Despite their huge environmental fund and dedication to environmental causes, Amazon continues to ship packages in Canada in non- recyclable, yellow paper-coated bubble wrap mailers. Their commercials advertising their social charity contributions in Canada show a truck filled entirely with recyclable cardboard boxes. However, with the pandemic, I have ordered more frequently from Amazon and noticed most packages come in the non recyclable bubble mailer packaging. I have also noticed they will package items separately and rather than placing them both in a box they will put them in separate mailers.
Even if your viewpoint is I don't shop there or I boycott Amazon, you should care about them polluting our environment with plastic. According to Disfold.com, in 2020, Amazon.ca was by far top ecommerce retailer in Canada, with 135.5 million visits to their site per month. If 10% of those visits result in a purchase of a single item packaged in a nonrecyclale bubble mailer, that would be 13.5 million bubble mailers per month. These mailers are not recyclable and won't breakdown. Imagine the millions of plastic mailers going into our landfills annually, especiallly during the pandemic, by this giant global retailer.
Amazon as a top retailer has a responsibility to provide more sustainable packaging and to take responsibility for the plastic waste they are producing. They could opt for all plastic bubblewrap mailers, padded paper mailers, or hard cardboard mailers made from recycled materials that can be recycled. Given their environmental fund and global sales volume, Amazon could also be a sustainability leader develop their own innovative reusable or biodegradable packaging. They should also be responsible retailers and collect the unrecyclable packaging and soak the packaging to separate the paper coating from plastic so they can be recycled. Ask Amazon to care about more than bottomline profit by using the cheapest least responsible mailing materials and adopt a more sustainable approach in Canada .
