On April 4th, 2025, a distressing incident occurred involving a Sussex police officer and a member of our community in Brighton. This officer, fully aware of the individual’s learning difficulties and autism, forcefully apprehended him, using excessive force and verbal abuse. Such behaviour towards a vulnerable individual is unacceptable and demands immediate action from the authorities.

Despite numerous complaints against this officer, the Sussex Police Department has remained silent, choosing inaction over accountability. This ongoing silence not only perpetuates a cycle of abuse but also erodes the trust between the community and those sworn to protect it. This incident is not isolated; it reflects a broader issue regarding how law enforcement interacts with individuals who have disabilities. The Sussex Police Complaint Department must address this serious misconduct with urgency.
