The HSE can spend €127,000 on a bike shed at University Hospital Kerry - yet patients approved under the ESAIS scheme are still expected to somehow find thousands upfront for accommodation and travel just to access surgery abroad.

That reality is not “equal access” to healthcare.

For patients like me, being approved for treatment abroad means:
• flights
• accommodation for weeks
• food and transport costs
• loss of income
• recovery away from home

And many of us are already financially devastated from years of chronic illness.

A healthcare scheme is not truly accessible if only people with savings, credit cards, family wealth, or financial privilege can actually use it.

The system acknowledges the medical need - but leaves patients carrying the financial burden of survival.

That gap needs to change.
