Ishi Photo in Gifford Room/Anthropology Building

The Issue

A photo of Ishi was removed from the Anthropology wall inside the Gifford Room #221 and we want it back on the wall.

Ishi is a part of California History, Native American History and taught about in Ethnic studies. He was an early Native American educator and cultural ambassador whose contributions helped shape the origins of Anthropology at UC Berkeley from 1911-1916.  For the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum to be the very institution he lived in while contributing to the Anthropology department Alfred Kroeber established and not be recognized as a Native American colleague continues the silence about the Universities history.  Ishi should be recognized for giving his life and for his contributions to the discipline of Anthropology.  The shift occurring within the academic field has been geared towards a more diverse and inclusive community.  Ishi's picture on the wall honors and upholds those values we stand by today.
