Is Democracy still exists in Andhra Pradesh?

Is Democracy still exists in Andhra Pradesh?

The Issue

Is there democracy still exist in Andhra Pradesh - It’s not about single political party.  This is about future of Andhra Pradesh people. Who wants democracy?

In recent years, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed several troubling signs of democratic erosion, particularly concerning the freedom of the press and civil liberties. Since 2014, media freedom in the state has been under severe pressure. Successive administrations have employed tactics to control and influence media narratives, including banning critical newspapers from covering government events and press conferences. This undermines journalistic independence and restricts the flow of unbiased information to the public .

More alarmingly, there have been numerous direct attacks on journalists and media institutions. These attacks include physical assaults on journalists, vandalism of media offices, and threats to the lives of those who publish dissenting views. Such aggressive tactics not only endanger individual journalists but also pose a serious threat to democratic principles, particularly the freedom of the press .

Furthermore, civil society in Andhra Pradesh, much like the rest of India, has faced increasing restrictions. Organizations, especially those advocating for human rights and government accountability, have encountered obstacles such as denial of registration, suspension of operations, and smear campaigns aimed at discrediting their work. This shrinking space for civil society limits the capacity for public discourse and activism, essential components of a healthy democracy .

These developments highlight a significant backslide in democratic norms in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting broader trends seen across India, where political pressures increasingly undermine civil liberties and institutional checks and balances .
