Irish Language teaching crisis in the Dingle Gaeltacht

The Issue

As Gaeilge ar dtús, English follows below.

Tá pobal Gaeilge Ghaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne fágtha gan Teagascóir Gaeilge/Comhordnóir Chlár Teagaisc Gaeilge ó mhí na Bealtaine 2024. Chruthaigh Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne an post sin sa bhliain 2000 agus is mó duine a bhain leas agus tairbhe as an gcinneadh sin in imeacht na bhfiche bliain. Dhiúltaigh Roinn na Gaeltachta an post a mhaoiniú a thuilleadh ón mbliain 2020. Fágadh an soláthar Aosoideachais sa Ghaeilge sa Ghaeltacht as sin amach fé chúram Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chiarraí agus bhí maoiniú ceithre mbliana ar fáil don bpost. Tá dhá cheantar Gaeltachta féna gcúram sin – Corca Dhuibhne agus Uíbh Ráthach. Ach níl duine ar bith ag feidhmiú sa phost i gCorca Dhuibhne ó mhí na Bealtaine seo caite.

Té sé ríthábhachtach do cheantar Gaeltachta Chorca Dhuibhne agus ina ábhar práinne do phobal na teanga go gceapfaí duine don bpost seo láithreach. Tá leanúnchas sa bhfoghlaim teanga caillte ag mic léinn 2022/2023 agus tá breis is 150 ansin. Agus is cuid lárnach den Phleanáil Teanga sa Ghaeltacht agus sa Daingean, Baile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta, go mbeadh cúrsaí i labhairt na Gaeilge ar ardchaighdeán, cúrsaí oiliúna sa teanga agus Aosoideachas tré Ghaeilge ar fáil don phobal áitiúil. Anseo thíos tá an réimse cúrsaí a cuireadh ar fáil sa bhliain acadúil le trí bliana anuas amháin

Táimid ag iarraidh ar an Aire Oideachais, an tAire Gaeltachta agus ar Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chiarraí an scéal seo a chur ina cheart láithreach bonn.

We are an enthusiastic community of 150 active students of the Irish Language in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht, where we all passionately strive towards fluency in the national language to assimilate into the Gaeltacht where we live.  We have undertaken TEG exams to progress from beginners level A1 to B2 advanced level. We have all put in hard work to get to this point due to the support of KETB and want to continue our journey.  We understand how important it is to have qualified teachers who live and breathe the language they tutor. For at least 10 years now, we have been thriving on our journey to fluency with teachers help. However, since May 2024 , our progress has been seriously hindered by the delay of Kerry Education Training Board (KETB) to replacement our only two teachers. We are eagerly waiting to start again and we are now very frustrated at the delay to get  Irish teachers. This is a crisis for us and for the Irish language in our area.

In the census of 2022, The number of people speaking Irish daily within and outside the education system in the Dingle Gaeltacht rose from 415 to 590. It was a cause of celebration for us and this was a direct result of our teachers work with us. Finally, we have reversed the years of decline in our area. Now, with each passing day, we risk the devaluation of this number if we do not fill the potential damage created by non-replaced  teachers immediately.

Now, we are experiencing the harsh reality that without teacher replacements, communication in Irish with locals and between our large group has deteriorated resulting in severely reduced opportunities to advance and even use the amount of Irish we have learned to date.

We call upon the Minister of Education, the Minister of the Gaeltacht and Kerry Education Training Board to work together and take immediate action to hire at least two permenant Irish language teachers so the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht doesn’t suffer any further, thereby ensuring that dedicated learners like us, don't lose out. Our national language is at risk of another damaging blow; it calls out to you for the support it needs today, more urgently than ever before. Please, sign this petition and take the first step towards protecting our language and our heritage in our fragile Gaeltacht.
