introduce an anti-catcalling law in Ireland

The Issue

Cat Calling refers to the act of shouting harassing and often sexually suggestive, threatening or derisive comments at someone publicly.

Our aim is to introduce an anti-cat-calling law, allowing Garda to issue on the spot fines for degrading comments and offensive sexist or sexual behaviour. Currently there are no laws which prohibit catcalling or similarly offensive behaviour. The anti-catcalling law was introduced in France in 2018, and within the first year that the law was passed over 700 people were fined.

By introducing this law we can crack down on the kind of predatory behaviour that restricts Irish women's everyday lives, making them in some cases afraid to leave their homes. Ireland has the highest level of claimed sexual harassment in Europe - and is among the worst in the world. It is no longer permissible and must no longer be tolerated to insult, to follow, to humiliate women by harassing them in the street, on transport or in public space!
