Iowa State University Class of 2020 Commencement Rescheduling

Iowa State University Class of 2020 Commencement Rescheduling
Why this petition matters
Due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, most universities across the country have sent college students home, transitioned to online classes, and taken other measures to protect their communities. On March 18th, Iowa State University announced that they were making the decision to cancel all commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020 and instead offered students the opportunity to attend the next graduate ceremony in December, 2020. This time is not realistic for students to come back to Ames to attend the December commencement as many students will be working in their careers or earning degrees in higher education. While the cancellation is entirely understandable to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of those in our communities, Iowa State University students have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, four (plus) years, and worked incredibly hard to earn their degree at this institution. For many people, commencement marks the celebration of an important and meaningful achievement. Most students have dreamed of the day they could walk across that stage to celebrate the many achievements and memories made at ISU. This is a commemorative moment in every students' life, and to have this celebration of achievement taken away is heartbreaking. This petition is a call for Iowa State University, and the Iowa Board of Regents to reschedule graduation at a time when the threat of COVID-19 is no longer impending and to give students the recognition they deserve.
