Abolish "Alimony for life"

Abolish "Alimony for life"

The Issue

People should sign because a life term of alimony at a state level contradicts every word of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. Especially FREEDOM, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. The Governor of Massachusetts declared that a life sentence of financial bondage is cruel and inhumane. Massachusetts outlawed life sentencing of alimony by a unanimous vote.   After studying over five hundred cases not one lifetime recipient improved their education, or remarried. Ultimately only the death of the recipient or the person charged to pay ends the burden. Failure to comply is considered contempt of court, subject to fines, jail, or loss of privileges like a driver's license.   This law punishes people that work, people that are educated, and people that provide for their families. It is absolutely backwards, because the law rewards bad behavior.   It is assumed that the person seeking spousal support is a productive member of the household despite proof. Adultery and abuse are irrelevant in alimony cases.    Murderers, rapists, pedophiles rarely serve life sentences in prison, so why are responsible hard working people sentenced to a life in financial bondage? Why are they subject to being taken to court once every three years to divulge personal information by the person they are forced to pay?   Cohabitation was a law put into place, to protect people that paid alimony, so their former spouse could not double dip and be supported by a partner and continue to exploit their ex. This law is no longer enforced and judges are urged to not to enforce it because it violates the civil liberties of the recipient.   The last point I need to make is alimony was a law put into place protect women when they clearly had less rights. It made sense when it was originally written. Gender has been removed from the wording, but the overwhelming majority of payers are men. Now every state boasts of equal rights and diversity. Businesses claim to be equal opportunity employers. If these things are true, there is no longer a need for this archaic law.
