Stop Breed Specific Legislation in Iowa

The Issue

In Iowa, the state gives cities power to create bans, or Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) over certain breeds of dogs. While a family may have one of these dogs, that is properly trained and that has never attacked anything, they may not bring the dog into the city if there is a ban. Iowans need to stop BSL and start blaming the irresponsible owners of the animals if there is an attack, not the breed. The following states ban BSL and I believe it would be the right thing for Iowa to follow suit: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Dog breeds that BSL target in America are: Akita, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs, Alaskan Malamute, American Bandogge, American Bulldog, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Belgian Malinois, Bullmastiff, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, German Shepherd Dog, Miniature Bull Terrier, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pit bull mixes, Perro de Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Shar Pei, Siberian Husky, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Tosa Inu, and wolf-hybrids. Many owners of these breeds have not had any issues. It's irresponsible owners that don't train their pets properly that cause the problems. "Iowa - Supreme Court of Iowa upheld a municipal ordinance classifying pit bulls and other breeds as "vicious dogs" and requiring specific licensing and keeping standards for such breeds. (American Dog Owners Association v. City of Des Moines, 1991)" - https://www.avma.org/Advocacy/StateAndLocal/Pages/sr-breed-ordinances.aspx As we lose our common freedoms in the US we need to protect our property and the freedoms we have left. Any animal can be dangerous, not just the "labeled" ones. Please sign the petition to protect our rights and pets. This petition will be sent to the Iowa Governor, Terry Branstad for consideration. Thank you!
