In a short-sighted move, on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 the Iowa City City Council rejected a proposed partnership with MidAmerican Energy to install 3 MW of solar panels in the Waterworks Prairie Park. We ask the City Council to reconsider and immediately approve this project.

Climate change is an existential threat. In a time when the federal government has abdicated its responsibility on this issue, it is up to local governments to step in and take action. The city's Climate Action Plan is a roadmap to getting to zero net carbon emissions by 2050. Part of this plan is installing solar projects on public land. The Waterworks Prairie Park solar project was to be the first of many such installations. Some opposition to the project stemmed from its location. However, the proposed project would involve 19 acres out of a 200 acre park. No existing use would be impacted. The very heart of the idea of environmental justice is shared costs, as well as shared benefits. The benefits of this project outweigh the costs, and both benefits and costs will be shared by local residents.

Please join me in asking the Iowa City City Council to reconsider and immediately approve the partnership with MidAmerican Energy to install 3 MW of solar panels in Waterworks Prairie Park.
