I welcome the announcement by Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland that Canada will be imposing targeted sanctions against a Myanmar general who led a brutal military campaign against Rohingya civilians in that nation that forced almost 700,000 Rohingya refugees to flee to Bangladesh, resulted in the massacre of thousands of Rohingya men, women and children, and the destruction of over 350 Rohingya communities. The sanctions will be imposed on Major-General Maung Maung Soe and follow similar actions by the United States against Soe in December. However, this is a very small first step, and more needs to be done to put pressure on Myanmar leaders, and to find justice for the thousands of peaceful Rohingya men, women and children killed by Myanmar's military. If you haven't done so already get your family, friends, and members of your community to sign this petition. The more voices we have supporting the cause the less the government can drag its heels on taking real action that will address the root causes of the genocidal policies of the Myanmar government. We are only a few hundred signatures short of 50,000, please help us reach that target in the coming days. Thank you. Fareed Khan Rohingya Human Rights Network
