After being appointed as Canada's Special Envoy to Myanmar in November Bob Rae released his final report in early April on how the Canadian government should respond to the Rohingya crisis. The report titled "Tell Them We're Human" contains 17 recommendations on what Canada can do to help the Rohingya people. One of the recommendations calls on Canada to step into a leadership position on the international stage on this issue and work to solicit support and aid from its allies and partner nations to prevent genocide against the Rohingya -- something I was asked to comment on in this interview. In a few weeks the monsoon season will arrive in Bangladesh where almost a million Rohingya are living in the largest refugee camp in the world and are eking out a living with limited resources. They are suffering physical and psychological trauma from surviving crimes against humanity and genocide at the hands of the Myanmar government. Over 60% are women and children, over 75,000 women who were victims of gang rape will soon bear children who will face stigmatization for the rest of their lives, and over 40,000 are orphaned children. Please join me in helping a people the UN has called the "most persecuted minority in the world". We were too late to stop the genocide in Rwanda, in the Balkans, and in Darfur. Let's make sure the words "never again" actually mean something this time.
