The Issue

As a white Englishman, I have grown increasingly unsettled in my own homeland. It seems as if I am rapidly being transformed into an alien within my country's borders, a sentiment attributed mostly to the government's ineffectual policies. It's time we invoke Article 61 of the Magna Carta and call for a vote of no confidence in our government.

Article 61, added in the historic Magna Carta of 1215, enables the people to bring about a lawful rebellious pressure against the regime in power, if it is perceived to be not serving their interests. An invocation of this article bespeaks of a rigorous consensus amongst the populace that changes in governance must occur.

Now, let us revisit the main interpretative text of the Magna Carta, where it says that “If we, our chief justice, our officials, or any of our servants offend in any respect against any man, or transgress any of the articles of the peace or of this security… the four barons shall refer the matter to the rest of the twenty-five barons” (Magna Carta: A Commentary on the Great Charter of King John, by William Sharp McKechnie).

In simple terms, this is what many of us feel right now - that our government has transgressed the articles of peace and security. It is clear that something drastic and powerful must be done, thus invoking Article 61 of the Magna Carta for a vote of no confidence.

Let us champion this historic precedent once more. Stand with me in this fight to restore safety and confidence in our governing bodies. Sign this petition now.
