Petition to Uber: Address Driver Concerns and Implement Fair Practices immediately

Uber started as a ride sharing company but over the years, many people have chosen to drive with the company as a primary income source. With the advancement of technology, Uber has established a brand in public transportation industry and has replaced traditional taxi services majorly. With time, things have changed, inflation is on upsurge and cost of every commodity has risen substantially. Uber is aware of this too; however, they made a decision to decrease fares significantly and this has impacted the livelihood of majority of drivers.

As such, we the undersigned drivers, who have been significantly impacted by Uber’s decision on cutting fares aggressively, urge Uber to immediately implement the following changes to address the concerns of its driver partners otherwise we would be left with no choice but to lodge a class action lawsuit against the company for impacting the efficient operation of independent businesses. To rectify, we demand the following to Uber and Rasier Pacific Pty Limited.

Increase Fares:
Reason: The recent fare cuts have significantly reduced driver earnings, making it difficult for them to cover expenses and earn a living wage. Fares have dropped across all uber types significantly, for instance, on uber-x, per km rate has fallen from $1.32 to up to 78c, a decrease of up to 40% per km, it is outrageous. After Uber’s commission, drivers receive 56c per km, while ATO has set standard car related expenses at 88c per km for 2024/25. Also, there is no compensation for the distance travelled to pick up, rendering trips unprofitable, higher cancellation and lower acceptance rates and unreliable service to our riders.
Proposal: Immediately, increase fares by a substantial percentage to compensate for inflation, the increased workload on drivers, and the reduced earnings from recent fare cuts and provide compensation of the lost wages by Uber’s decision.

Reduce Uber Service Fee:
Reason: Uber's service fee takes a significant portion of each driver's earnings, reducing their overall income. For instance, on a minimum fare, rider pays AUD 9.34, drivers receive AUD 6.16 which is 34% not as advertised 27.5%, uber is receiving 85c booking fee per trip and charging a 27.5% service fee.
Proposal: Decrease the service fee to a more equitable level, allowing drivers to retain a larger share of their earnings so they can pay for rising fuel, insurance, and living costs.

Transparent Trip Details:
Reason: Drivers are often misled by Uber's lack of transparency regarding trip details, leading to unexpected earnings and forcing drivers to acceptance of unprofitable jobs.
Proposal: Display pickup, drop-off, and fares before accepting trips, enabling drivers to make informed decisions about whether to accept or decline a job. Drivers are treated as independent businesses, so they must be able to find out if a job is worth the time.

Increase Minimum Fare:
Reason: Short trips often do not provide sufficient compensation for drivers, leading to dissatisfaction, increased pressure and a decline in driver morale. The minimum fare currently is not even enough to buy a coffee considering time and cost of fuel and other expenses.
Proposal: Implement a higher minimum fare to ensure that drivers earn a reasonable amount for trips, regardless of the distance travelled and time spent.

Consistent Surge Pricing:
Reason: Inconsistent surge pricing has led to driver frustration during peak hours not being able to get paid as per demand and discourages drivers from working during peak demand times. Also, riders feel stranded, and Uber’s reputation is becoming unreliable, as drivers are waiting for a better surge trip and the downtime is higher.
Proposal: Implement a fair and consistent surge pricing system that accurately reflects the increased demand and compensates drivers accordingly.

Compensate Long-Distance Pickups:
Reason: Drivers who accept trips from remote areas often incur additional costs, such as increased fuel consumption and wear and tear on their vehicles when travelling long distance to pickups. There should be a distance limit to send requests to drivers.
Proposal: Fairly compensate drivers for longer pickup distances.

Remove Pool Trips and Adjust Fares:
Reason: Pool trips can be unpredictable and often result in lower earnings for drivers, especially when multiple riders are picked up and dropped off. Also because different unverified riders are sharing, it is a major safety concern, especially during night times.
Proposal: Remove unprofitable pool trips and adjust fares for other trip types to ensure that drivers are adequately compensated for their work.

Protection from Unfair Dismissal:
Reason: Drivers can be unfairly deactivated based on unfounded complaints or misunderstandings, leading to financial hardship and loss of income. For instance, driver loses access just because of a rider complaining that the car is damaged. Uber does not listen to the driver side of story, puts a suspension immediately.
Proposal: Establish a fair and transparent process for handling rider complaints, ensuring that drivers are not unfairly penalized and have the opportunity to defend themselves. Provide paid leave while investigation is conducted. Driver be informed properly so they can dispute allegations. Disclose reward given to accuser. Criminal allegations be tested in a legal jurisdiction with full Natural Justice processes.

Driver Support Fund:
Reason: Drivers may face unexpected challenges or hardships that can impact their ability to work, such as accidents, illnesses, or vehicle breakdowns.
Proposal: Establish a driver support fund to provide financial assistance to drivers who are impacted by changes or calamities.

Driver Rating:
Reason: Driver ratings can be unfairly influenced by factors beyond the driver's control, such as traffic congestion, drop-off unavailable esp. in metro areas, weather conditions, or difficult passengers.
Proposal: Ignore rider ratings for events beyond the driver's control to prevent unfair penalties and maintain driver morale. There is a system in place but this current system needs improvement.

Uber Pro:
Reason: The current requirements for Uber Pro status can be challenging to meet, 85% acceptance, when over one fourth of trips are incoming from 10 km and over. Also, cancellation rate is too low to be achieved, this is just enforcing drivers into unprofitable trips and leading to poor driving experience.
Proposal: Change the acceptance and cancellation rates for Uber Pro status to more reasonable percentages to reduce the pressure on drivers to accept unprofitable trips.

Provision of Replacement Vehicles:
Reason: If a driver is not at fault in an accident, they should not be penalized by losing income due to vehicle downtime. Currently, even if riders damage vehicles, drivers are left with no choice but to spend their own time and money.
Proposal: Provide a replacement vehicle to drivers who are not at fault in an accident to ensure that they can continue to earn income while their vehicle is being repaired.

Better Fare Structure:
Reason: The current fare structure is confusing, misleading and does not accurately reflect the true costs associated with providing rides, leading to unfair compensation for drivers.
Proposal: Implement a simpler and better fare structure that is easy to understand and same for all drivers no matter which part of the town they are driving.

Effective Immediately:
Reason: The concerns of drivers are urgent and require immediate attention to prevent further harm. The experience is worsening every moment Uber is delaying to rectify these unfair practices.
Proposal: Implement these changes immediately to address the urgent concerns of drivers and ensure that they can continue to work and make a living.

By addressing these concerns, Uber can improve the working conditions of its driver partners, foster a more positive driver community, and ensure a reliable, sustainable and fair experience for all riders and drivers. Also, this will help all individual Uber drivers to carry on with their independent businesses at a profitable level.
