Investing in Veterinary Technology Student Success at NVCC
Investing in Veterinary Technology Student Success at NVCC
The Issue
Students in Northern Virginia Community College's Veterinary Technology Program are enrolled in a highly structured, hands-on healthcare program. They manage a demanding combination of lecture and lab coursework, clinical requirements, and program-mandated working hours. Unfortunately, students enrolled in the program do not have an advisor who is knowledgeable about the program.
Access to timely, program-specific advising is essential to their success and to the overall success of the program.
We respectfully request a dedicated, knowledgeable academic advisor with a consistent in-person presence in the NVCC Veterinary Technology Program building.
At present, limited access to an advisor, particularly someone knowledgeable about our program, creates challenges in several areas, specifically:
- Coordinating Pre-Vet Tech clinical placement and understanding application requirements
- Navigating degree-related general education requirements toward timely graduation
- Receiving support for time-sensitive academic and/or administrative concerns
- Ensuring appropriate transfer of credits from previous institutions
- Understanding and facilitating program progression and graduation requirements
Given the rigor and specificity of the NVCC Veterinary Technology curriculum, general advising services (including those available on the Loudoun campus) are often insufficient in providing the level of program-specific guidance needed at critical moments.
A dedicated advisor knowledgeable about our specific program and present within the Veterinary Technology building would significantly enhance the student experience by:
- Providing timely, in-person support for complex issues
- Improving clarity and accuracy in program-specific advising, reducing instances of students being redirected to multiple departments
- Strengthening communication and collaboration between students, faculty, and advising staff
- Supporting student retention, confidence, and overall academic success
This program requires careful planning and strict adherence to a structured course sequence. Even minor delays or miscommunications can disrupt students’ ability to stay on track. A knowledgeable on-site advisor would help mitigate these challenges and better support current and future students.
Improved advising can lead to higher retention and graduation rates, more efficient course planning, and stronger student satisfaction. A well-supported Veterinary Technology program enhances NVCC’s reputation for delivering high-quality, career-focused education and helps ensure graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce, reflecting positively on both the program and the institution.
We respectfully request that NVCC consider assigning a dedicated Veterinary Technology program advisor who is regularly staffed and available within the Veterinary Technology program building.
We are grateful for the opportunities this program provides and appreciate your time and consideration in supporting student success.
