The Issue

Children must never be casualties of war.

Reports from Iran state that a girls’ elementary school in Minab was struck during recent military operations. Iranian officials claim significant child casualties, though those figures have not been independently verified. The U.S. military has acknowledged the reports and stated it is reviewing possible civilian harm.

When allegations emerge that a school may have been struck and children may have been killed, the world cannot look away.

We call for:

  • An immediate, independent international investigation under the authority of the United Nations Human Rights Council to determine what occurred.
  • A transparent civilian harm assessment by the U.S. Department of Defense, with findings made public.
  • Congressional oversight hearings to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law and civilian protection protocols.
  • Renewed commitments from all parties involved in the conflict to uphold the protection of schools and children under the laws of armed conflict.

Even in war, there are rules. International humanitarian law requires distinction between civilian and military targets and demands every feasible precaution to avoid civilian harm.

Schools are protected spaces under international norms. Children deserve safety regardless of nationality, religion, or politics.

Accountability strengthens legitimacy. Transparency builds trust. Independent verification prevents misinformation and ensures justice.

If civilian harm occurred, it must be acknowledged. If procedures failed, they must be corrected. If schools are at risk, protections must be reinforced.

The protection of children cannot be partisan. It cannot be conditional. It must be absolute.

Investigate. Report transparently. Protect schools.
