A suspected gunman carrying a shotgun, handgun, and knives was able to rush past a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner—an event attended by President Trump, the Vice President, and hundreds of officials and journalists.

The suspect made it inside the hotel security perimeter, reaching a lobby area just one floor above the president before being stopped.

Officials say the system “worked” because the attacker didn’t reach the ballroom.

But this raises urgent questions:

How was he able to enter the building with weapons?
Why wasn’t he stopped at the first checkpoint?
Are current security protocols enough when top government leaders gather in one place?
This was described as a potential assassination attempt.
