The Issue
Last week, we experienced a nightmare that no family should ever endure. Our 1.5-year-old grandson was subjected to horrific abuse under the very roof that was supposed to protect him. We witnessed him being hit in the face multiple times and spanked with no protection, leaving him vulnerable and traumatized. The abuser, his great-grandmother, admitted to Child Protective Services (CPS) that she had become flustered, yet the incident was dismissed as a non-issue by the authorities responsible for safeguarding our children.
This is not an isolated incident in Johnson County, Texas. We are raising our voices not just for our grandson, but for all children in the community who might be suffering under the veil of indifference from the Sheriff's Department and CPS. There is a systemic failure in their duty of care, which is leaving the most vulnerable individuals unchecked and unprotected.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and CPS must be thoroughly investigated for their handling (or mishandling) of child protection cases. Our demand is simple yet vital: implement policies and procedures that prioritize rigorous investigations into abuse allegations and ensure accountability when protecting our kids. Training personnel in cultural sensitivity, mental health awareness, and non-bias responses are the first steps towards rectifying the neglect that has been allowed to persist.
Statistics show that in the United States, about one in four children experience some form of child abuse or neglect. When those sworn to protect turn a blind eye, these numbers could rise even higher. This is why immediate intervention and change are paramount.
We urge state and local officials to take our concerns seriously and take decisive action to audit current procedures. We need to create an environment where children feel safe and cared for, and where perpetrators of abuse are held accountable, not hidden behind institutional laxity.
