The Issue

Marie Ange Blaise was a 44-year-old Haitian woman who died on April 25 while in ICE custody. She was transferred between multiple detention facilities across Puerto Rico, Louisiana, and Florida after being detained for not having a valid visa. She had committed no violent crime. She was trying to board a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Marie spent more than 10 weeks in immigration detention. Women who were detained with her have reported horrific conditions during that time, including being chained for hours without bathroom access, overcrowded cells, and denied basic medical care. Marie never spoke publicly but others confirmed she endured those same conditions.

She is one of at least seven people who have died in ICE custody in this fiscal year alone. The pattern is undeniable. People are being neglected, harmed, and lost under a system that claims to uphold safety and dignity.

ICE says her death is under investigation, but how many times have we heard that before? When people die in U.S. custody, the public deserves answers not vague statements and delayed reports.

We are demanding a full, independent investigation into ICE’s role in the death of Marie Ange Blaise. We are calling on the Department of Homeland Security and Congress to investigate all in-custody deaths this year and to take immediate steps to protect those still detained.

This is not about immigration policy. This is about human life. It is about a 44-year-old woman who died far from home, in a system that failed her.

Sign now to demand justice for Marie Ange Blaise and real accountability for every death inside ICE detention.
