The Issue

Attorneys representing dozens of detainees at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, say their clients have been served expired food and meals with worms in them. Some detainees have been released in recent months not because their cases were resolved — but because they weren't receiving treatment for cancer, diabetes, and depression.

Nearly 900 people are being held at Delaney Hall. Advocates say hundreds launched a hunger strike over the weekend. The federal government says there is no hunger strike and no problem. But when New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill tried to see for herself, ICE turned her away at the door.

Senator Andy Kim was on the ground Monday. He described detainees protesting lack of due process and "disgusting food" while families stood outside calling for help — and ICE responded with armored vehicles, pepper balls, and chemical agents.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has called on the governor to empower the state Attorney General to investigate immediately, along with an independent inspection by the Department of Health.

We're demanding exactly that. Investigate Delaney Hall now. Hold the federal government and GEO Group, the private company operating this facility, fully accountable for what is happening inside.

No one in government custody should be fed expired food, denied cancer medication, or hidden from their elected representatives.
