Federal border agents in Montana are facing serious allegations of cruelty, threats, and denied medical care — and the people affected deserve real accountability, not silence.

According to court records filed in a class-action lawsuit against Cascade County and the Department of Homeland Security, Jonny Hernandez Antunez said in his declaration that a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent told him "he wanted me to run so that he could use his gun on me." Antunez said he was terrified, in part because his wife knows people who have been killed by CBP. He also says agents refused his gastritis medication three separate times, including after being held in the back of a hot truck, where he believes he passed out from the heat.

Irving Alonso Acosta, another possible class member, alleges he was kicked while in custody and warned he would stay in jail if he spoke with a lawyer. According to his declaration, an agent told him, "If you don't sign, I'm going to sign it for you," about paperwork Acosta says he was never given a real chance to read.

A federal judge has already ruled that agents violated the constitutional rights of two other detainees held in these same facilities, including by skipping warrants entirely. That ruling should be a warning, not a one-time exception.

No one — regardless of immigration status — should be threatened with violence, denied medication, or pressured into signing documents they cannot read. The Department of Homeland Security and Cascade County officials must investigate these specific allegations and hold any responsible agent accountable.
