- In a speech to the National Conservatism Conference in Orlando, Florida in early November, Political Science Professor at Boise State University, Scott Yenor said the Following:
"Our independent women seek their purpose in life in midlevel bureaucratic jobs like human resource management, environmental protection, and marketing. They're more medicated, meddlesome, and quarrelsome than women need to be."
Boise State University has taken the stance that Professor Yenor's statement is "academic freedom and the expression of ideas" protected by the first amendment of the Constitution and that his actions do not reflect what Boise State as an institution stands for.
To refer to women as a collective (including over 10,000 women currently enrolled at Boise State) as "medicated, meddlesome, and quarrelsome" is not an academic statement made in the spirit of learning, but a malicious ad hominem attack on a group that has been marginalized in academia for over a century.
Professor Yenor's statement is in violation of Boise State University Policy 1060, which states:
"Boise State University is committed to maintaining a working, learning, and campus living environment in which all members of the University Community are treated with dignity and respect...Accordingly, Boise State prohibits Discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and pregnancy."
Professor Yenor's statement is clearly one of discrimination against women. In light of this violation, and if the Professor's words themselves are not damning in their own right., Boise State University should launch an investigation into whether Professor Yenor's verbal discrimination is endemic in his academic behavior, including the following:
- Male vs. Female grade assignments
- Male vs. Female colleague evaluations
Additionally, removal from his position at the University should be considered on the grounds of his violation of Policy 1060.
We cannot stress enough the importance of past and present students to speak out about their experiences and report any concerns to the University under Title IX

Action needs to be taken to preserve the academic integrity of Boise State, to set an example to others in academia that discrimination in any form will not be tolerated, and to ensure that a generation of women and women in posterity can pursue an education and career at the highest level with the support and fair treatment of the academic community.
