Invest in Our Children’s Future – Urgent Upgrades to Wales Street Primary School
The issue
To:
The Minister of Education, The Hon. Ben Carroll MP
Ms. Kat. Theophanous MP, State Member for Northcote
We, the parents, carers, and community members of Wales Street Primary School in Thornbury, call for immediate investment in our school’s infrastructure to ensure the safety, wellbeing, and success of every student.
Our school is committed to providing the best possible learning environment, but our facilities have not kept pace with growing enrolments. The Victorian School Building Authority rated the condition of our school facilities as 'well below poor'. Current infrastructure is outdated and inadequate, creating risks and limiting opportunities for modern education.
Urgent upgrades are needed to:
- Provide a central hub and gymnasium to accommodate the entire school community for assemblies, celebrations, physical education, and arts programs.
- Prevent injuries and increase safety through improved facilities and compliance with modern standards.
- Support modern teaching practices with classrooms that are appropriately sized and dedicated, and not overcrowded.
- Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for every student and teacher, regardless of physical ability.
- Foster wellbeing and engagement by creating spaces that reflect our school’s culture and values.
These improvements align with Stage 2 of our School's Master Plan (see https://www.walesstps.vic.edu.au/future-redevelopment-plans/) and are essential to deliver equitable, high-quality education and to prepare our children for lifelong success.
We urge the Department of Education and Victorian Government to prioritise funding for these upgrades immediately. Investment in school infrastructure will positively impact student learning outcomes, wellbeing, and engagement. Overcrowding and undersized classrooms are already affecting students and teachers, and the lack of accessible facilities undermines inclusivity.
By signing this petition, we affirm:
- Our support for lobbying efforts to secure Victorian Government investment for urgent facility and infrastructure upgrades at Wales Street Primary School.
- Our commitment to advocacy actions to ensure these upgrades happen.
Together, we can create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment for every child.
