Invest in Lombard Park District by building a turf field.

The Issue

In my first year as a coach, the exhilaration of reaching the playoffs was overshadowed by an unexpected scramble. Our team, eager and prepared for the competition, was left without a field to play on, as the Falcon's field had turned into an unusable mud pit after a rainstorm. Our only option was to rush to Montini’s turf, a facility not our own, reflecting a continuous struggle faced by many in the Lombard Park District.

Our district, well-known for its commitment to providing excellent recreational opportunities, frequently finds itself at the mercy of weather and scheduling conflicts, reliant on other non-affiliated facilities. This not only strains our resources but also takes away from the community experience that should be centred right here in Lombard.

By investing in our own state-of-the-art turf field, not only could we ensure consistent quality for games and practices free from weather disruptions, but we'd strengthen community pride and keep park district funds within Lombard. A turf field would also open doors for hosting more local events, generating additional revenue, and fostering local talent without the disruption of last-minute venue changes.

The financial benefits would be substantial. Currently, renting fields strains the district's budget, funds that could otherwise maintain and improve our own facilities. The initial investment in a turf field would negate these recurring expenses, ultimately paying for itself over time.

This field would benefit not only sports teams but also other community activities, making it a versatile investment into Lombard's future. Moreover, the environmental impact would be favourable, as turf fields require less water, no pesticides, and have a smaller carbon footprint compared to natural grass.

Let's ensure that Lombard Park District can support its community without having to "beg and borrow." By signing this petition, you champion the creation of a turf field that will help maintain our local sports traditions, foster community spirit, and ensure the sustainability of our park district resources. Join us in making this critical investment a reality.

From Joe McCann, Executive Director — Lombard Park District (re: “Invest in Lombard Park District by building a turf field”) Thank you for your interest in improving our fields. I’m aware of the petition and have been in communication with the petition starter as well as the affiliate group that uses the field. We’re always glad to engage with residents about potential improvements, and our Park Board is aware of the request. As with any project, we’ll review the idea in the context of overall district needs, budget, lifecycle and maintenance considerations, other demands and factors, and community input. I appreciate the constructive way supporters are raising this and welcome continued dialogue as we evaluate options.
