Invest County's COVID Funds in Expanding Animal Shelter and Leash Law Enforcement

The Issue

Presently, our county is fortunate to possess considerable funds allocated for Covid relief. This wealth holds immense potential for strong and impactful investment that could genuinely benefit our local community. An area that desperately calls out for improved funding is our county’s animal shelter. Providing better facilities and broadening its size would substantially support the humane and compassionate treatment of animals.

Existing shelters are often overcrowded, which can lead to poor living conditions for animals. According to the Humane Society, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Similarly, county leash laws need stronger reinforcement to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both our pets and residents. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 4.7 million dog bite incidents occur in the United States each year, many of which could be prevented with proper leash law enforcement.

We request that the county administrators seriously consider investing a proportion of the Covid relief funds in the expansion and improvement of animal shelters and the enhancement of leash law enforcement. This would not only reflect our county’s commitment to humane treatment of animals but also preserve the safety and harmony of our community.
