Introduce post-transplant insurance policies in India

Introduce post-transplant insurance policies in India
The Issue
I had a transplant on 21 September 2025, and I know firsthand the financial burden that comes with it. It's alarming that after undergoing such a life-saving procedure, neither donors nor recipients in India are eligible for new health insurance policies. This creates a significant financial strain and leaves countless individuals vulnerable to extensive medical expenses.
Typically, transplant surgeries in India can cost anywhere from 25 to 50 lakh INR, which is a staggering amount for most families. Despite the high costs, there are no insurance options available to cover post-transplant healthcare. This lack of support not only affects the recipient but also discourages potential donors, as they too are left without insurance coverage.
To address this pressing issue, the Indian government should immediately take measures to alleviate the financial burden on transplant patients and donors. Firstly, there should be an introduction of a comprehensive health cover specifically designed for post-transplant recipients and donors. This would ensure that both parties have access to necessary medical care without the added stress of incurring massive debts.
Additionally, making transplant-related treatments tax-free would significantly ease the financial load on patients. Eliminating taxes on these crucial medical procedures will lower the out-of-pocket expenses for recipients who are already coping with the costs of surgery and recovery.
Moreover, a tax exemption for both donors and recipients would act as an incentive and a financial relief. Donors offer a part of themselves to save lives, and it is only fair that they receive benefits that acknowledge their kindness and sacrifice.
I urge you all to support this crucial change in policy. Let's work together to ensure that transplant patients and donors in India receive the insurance support they desperately need. Sign this petition to push for comprehensive health coverage and tax benefits for post-transplant individuals and their donors.
