Introduce optional bereavement alerts on GP records
Introduce optional bereavement alerts on GP records
The Issue
In the wake of my son, JJ's, stillbirth, I faced a heartbreaking challenge that no parent should have to endure. During appointments where I sought support for my grief, I was asked about my newborn not just once, but twice. Each time, I had to explain yet again that my baby had died. I cannot express how painful these interactions were, and no parent should be forced into such a situation repeatedly.
Through this experience, I have come to realize that there is a significant gap in the system when it comes to supporting bereaved parents in the UK. While every parent grieves uniquely, there is one area where universal support is needed: communication between general practitioners and bereaved families. There should be an option to have a sensitive alert placed on GP records, indicating the loss of a child. This would act as a discreet note to healthcare professionals, informing them of a parent's loss and preventing unnecessary distress.
Statistics indicate that around 3,200 stillbirths occur each year in the UK, according to Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity. Each of these represents an individual family plunged into grief. The introduction of an optional bereavement alert system within GP practices would be a compassionate step towards acknowledging and supporting the emotional needs of bereaved families.
Implementing this system could include the addition of a simple code or note in GP records that healthcare workers could see before any patient interaction. This alert should fully respect the family's wishes and privacy; it must remain optional, allowing families to choose if and when they want to use it.
Moreover, by placing emphasis on patient-centered care, healthcare systems would reinforce the importance of understanding and empathy, thereby easing some of the emotional burdens families face. It is time that the healthcare system reflects the compassionate society we all strive for.
Please join me in calling upon healthcare authorities to introduce optional bereavement alerts for GP records. It's a simple change that could make a world of difference for thousands of families across the UK. Sign this petition to ensure no parent has to explain their heartache repeatedly.
