Introduce Mandatory Mental Health Education in Schools

The Issue

Introduction:

Children are the heartbeat of our nation and the architects of our future. Their well-being is essential for a thriving society. Yet, we are witnessing a rise in mental health issues among our youth, a silent crisis demanding immediate action. This petition urges the integration of mental health education into the school curriculum to protect our children's future.

Statistics on Child Suicide and Mental Health Issues:

In India, mental health disorders among children are often undiagnosed and untreated. The Indian Journal of Psychiatry reported in 2019 that at least 50 million children in India suffer from mental health issues, with 80–90 percent not seeking support. Diagnosed disorders like ADHD, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia can severely impact children's health, education, and life outcomes.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 11,396 children in India died by suicide in 2020 alone, driven by academic pressure and personal issues. About 12% of Indian children aged 4 to 16 suffer from mental health disorders, highlighting the urgent need for structured mental health education in schools.

Impact of Mental Health Issues:

Untreated mental health issues in children lead to serious physiological and psychological problems, including severe depression, social withdrawal, and suicidal tendencies. Academically, these children often perform poorly, and socially, they struggle to form healthy relationships, leading to a lifetime of loneliness and dissatisfaction.

Proposed Solution:

To address these issues, we propose the following components for mandatory mental health education:

1. Early Intervention and Education:
   - Introduce age-appropriate mental health education from primary school.
   - Teach children about emotions, stress management, and coping strategies.

2. Training for Educators:
   - Provide specialized training for teachers to recognize signs of mental health issues.
   - Equip educators with tools to support students in distress.

3. Access to Mental Health Professionals:
   - Ensure every school has access to trained mental health professionals.
   - Create a safe environment where children can seek help without stigma.

Call to Action:

We urge governments and public and private sector partners to take decisive action in promoting mental health for all children, adolescents, and caregivers. This can be achieved by:

  1. Investing in child and adolescent mental health across all sectors for a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach.
  2. Allocating funds to strategies that promote good mental health and prevent violence.
  3. Integrating mental health interventions across health, education, and social protection sectors, and ensuring schools support mental health.
  4. Breaking the silence around mental illness by addressing stigma and promoting better understanding.

We appeal to parents, educators, and all concerned citizens to support this petition. By signing and sharing it, we can send a powerful message: Our children’s mental health matters, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they receive the support they need.

Let us act now, with urgency and compassion, to build a better, healthier tomorrow for our children. Please join me in this fight. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for the well-being of our children and ensuring they lead healthy, happy lives.
