The Issue

Growing up in Shoreham-Wading River, I always felt a strong connection to my Italian heritage. However, during my time as a student, I was never given the opportunity to learn Italian in our schools. As a 2014 Shoreham-Wading River graduate, this is not just an educational gap but a deeply personal issue for me. Now, as President of the Filitalia Long Island Chapter, I have the platform to advocate for change that will greatly benefit our community.

Language is a powerful tool that connects us to our roots and broadens our understanding of the world. Offering Italian language education in Shoreham-Wading River schools will provide students with the chance to explore their cultural heritage more deeply. Furthermore, it will enhance their cognitive abilities, opening doors to future career opportunities both locally and globally.

Studies show that students who learn a second language perform better academically overall. According to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, language learners rank higher in standardized tests and show increased proficiency in problem-solving skills. Additionally, Italian is the fourth most studied language in American universities, and having a foundation in this language could provide our students a significant academic advantage.

By opening the door for Italian language courses in Shoreham-Wading River schools, we are not only expanding foreign language opportunities for our students but also fostering an environment of inclusivity and diversity. This initiative will address the increasing demand for diverse language programs that reflect and serve our community's multicultural makeup.

The addition of Italian to our school curriculum is not just about language learning—it's about creating connections, fostering a love for lifelong learning, and providing our children with tools that will serve them well beyond the classroom. Let's offer our students the choice to learn Italian, connect with their heritage, and prepare for a multicultural world.

I urge the Shoreham-Wading River School District to consider this addition to our language programs. Please help make this vision a reality by signing this petition. Let’s give our students the opportunity to explore a language that could enrich their lives in countless ways.
