Why this petition matters

Currently, in New Zealand, there isn't any form of a program within schools targeting driver education. The issue lies with a lack of designated funding or support for schools to provide this or criteria for what to provide. At the very most, any course comes in the form of an optional “add-on” and in order to get more in-depth education, young drivers would need to seek out and utilise a private tutor or instructor. This is also a costly expense, especially for individuals facing financial difficulties. It is absolutely imperative that driver education be available to every young person in NZ equally, regardless of location or opportunities provided by the school. By introducing this into the curriculum, we would be supporting young people by facilitating their independence/social life, encouraging economic independence and overall setting them up for success in the future.
