Introduce civic sense classes in schools in India

The issue

India — a land of rich diversity, culture, and democracy — stands tall as one of the world’s most vibrant nations. Yet, amid this greatness, a glaring issue continues to affect our everyday lives: the lack of civic sense. From litter-strewn streets and vandalised public property to reckless driving and disregard for basic public etiquette, the absence of civic responsibility has become a national concern that impacts us all.

It’s time we addressed this at its root — through education.

We call upon the Ministry of Education to make Civic Sense Classes mandatory in all schools across India.

Civic sense is more than just following rules — it is about respect: respect for others, for public spaces, for the environment, and for the nation we all share. By introducing civic education early in life, we can nurture responsible, compassionate, and aware citizens who value community well-being and sustainable living.

Research supports this approach. A 2021 UNESCO report found that countries that prioritise civic education see greater community participation, reduced vandalism, and stronger environmental responsibility among their citizens. Imagine the impact such awareness could have on our society if every child in India grew up learning and practising civic responsibility from a young age.

We propose a structured, age-appropriate curriculum that teaches civic values through interactive and engaging methods — workshops, role-plays, community projects, and field visits. These lessons would not just stay within classrooms but shape how children interact with the world around them.

This is not just an educational reform — it’s a step towards building a cleaner, kinder, and more responsible India.

Let’s act now — for our children, our communities, and our nation’s future.
Sign this petition to urge the Ministry of Education to introduce Civic Sense Classes in schools across India. Together, we can raise a generation that truly values the power of community and collective responsibility.
