Introduce an independent review of developer-issued game bans on Steam

Introduce an independent review of developer-issued game bans on Steam
The Issue
I want to share my experience with Steam’s developer-issued Game Ban system and explain why I believe the current policy needs reform.
I received a Game Ban on my Steam account connected to Dead by Daylight due to a Steam Family Sharing association. I want to clearly state that I never cheated, used unauthorized software, or intentionally violated any game rules.
The situation appears to have started through Family Sharing with another user. Although activity on another account triggered a ban, my account became associated with it as well. At the time, I was not actively playing Dead by Daylight and had stopped months earlier.
What made the situation even more confusing was that I later regained full access to the game and could play normally again, while the Game Ban still remained permanently visible on my Steam profile. When I contacted the developer, I was told my account was not banned. However, Steam Support confirmed that the Game Ban still exists on my profile and can only be removed by the developer.
This left me in a situation where:
- I can play the game normally,
- the developer claims my account is not banned,
- yet my Steam profile permanently displays a Game Ban visible to everyone.
Unfortunately, my case is not isolated.
Another example involves the game Task Force, where multiple users reported receiving Game Bans despite little or no interaction with the game at all. One user reported being invited to a playtest through Discord, redeeming a Steam key, having the key revoked immediately, and then receiving a permanent Game Ban without ever even playing the game. Other affected users reported similar experiences, public review complaints, and lack of meaningful response from Steam Support.
Whether every individual claim is correct or not is not the core issue. The larger concern is that Steam’s current system allows developers to permanently mark Steam profiles with Game Bans while users have little to no access to transparent review, independent oversight, or meaningful dispute resolution through the platform itself.
I fully support developers having the ability to fight cheating and protect their games. However, when a punishment permanently affects a user’s Steam profile and reputation, there should also be safeguards to prevent:
- false associations,
- technical inconsistencies,
- automated errors,
- abuse of moderation systems,
- or permanent profile penalties without proper review.
Currently, Steam Support redirects users entirely back to developers, even though the Game Ban permanently affects a user’s Steam account and public profile reputation.
This petition is not about defending cheating or removing developers’ ability to moderate their games. It is about advocating for:
- transparent review processes,
- clear communication,
- independent oversight for permanent profile penalties,
- and better protections for Steam users against potential errors or abuse.
No platform system that permanently labels users as cheaters should operate without accountability or meaningful review mechanisms.
