The Issue

American Sign Language (ASL) is an essential tool of communication for millions of Americans, including approximately 500,000 individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing. As our society becomes more inclusive, the demand for proficient users of ASL is growing. Yet, the University of South Carolina only has ASL 1 & 2. Introducing an ASL 3 class at our institution will not only support students interested in expanding their communication skills but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Deaf community.

ASL encompasses more than just language; it includes cultural competency and awareness, which are increasingly crucial in our diverse society. A structured ASL curriculum, including an advanced ASL 3 class, enables students to achieve conversational proficiency, thereby preparing them for careers in fields such as education, social work, and healthcare where such skills are highly valued.

Moreover, establishing a pathway for students to minor or major in ASL would position our institution as a leader in Deaf education, opening opportunities for partnerships with Deaf organizations and enhancing our educational offerings. Universities like Gallaudet University, renowned for its ASL program, have demonstrated that comprehensive ASL education can significantly impact students and communities alike.

By supporting the introduction of an ASL 3 class now, we lay the groundwork for a full ASL curriculum in the future, empowering students with invaluable skills and promoting inclusivity. Let's come together to advocate for ASL 3 at our school and take a step toward adding a minor or major in ASL. Please sign this petition to show your support and help us make this essential program a reality.
