Introduce a Summer Uniform Policy for Wren Academy Secondary students

The Issue

Currently there is no official Secondary Phase Summer Uniform policy in place at Wren, forcing children to cover up and wear multiple layers of uniform when temperatures are at their highest.

In the Secondary Phase, in the Summer term, although jumpers are optional, shorts are not allowed and blazers must still be worn all the time throughout the school day (unless they issue a ‘Hot Weather Uniform’ letter), including travelling in between lessons etc. In class, they can only remove blazers with the teacher’s permission. This is a problem as the heat causes wellbeing issues, such as inability to concentrate in class, dehydration, headaches, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even fainting. This term the prestigious Dame Alice Owen school has taken warm weather into account and made changes to their uniform policy - we think Wren should follow and lead by example. The hot weather is only going to worsen, so we must act now!

We would like to request that Wren Academy takes into consideration all students' body temperature, comfort and wellbeing is equally and that:

  1. They introduce an official Secondary Summer uniform policy in the second half of the Summer Term, that allows all students to wear smart shorts, trousers or skirts, with optional blazers. If this is not acceptable then at least consider introducing shorts/PE kit for the Hot Weather Uniform policy that already allows optional blazers.

  2. The Summer uniform policies (for both Primary and Secondary) is at parents discretion in the first half of the Autumn term while weather can still be extremely warm in September. Eg Secondary Jumpers and Primary Summer dresses are optional.

  3. The asterix (*) is removed from the Secondary grey trousers on the school website. The compulsory grey trousers from Stevensons are a thick heavy fabric that are very uncomfortable for children in hot weather. High street alternatives are of a lighter fabric and cheaper, therefore parents should be entitled to buy thinner ones should they wish. The Primary Phase already allow flexibility on this.

Please sign this petition so we can collectively bring this to the attention of the school and it's governing body.
