Introduce a price cap for National League North/South tickets
The Issue
As a dedicated Southport fan, supporting my team often involves long and exciting journeys. However, it's also a commitment that should remain accessible, fair, and equitable for all fans regardless of where they are from. Recently, it came to my attention that a National League North club charged as much as £26 for an away fan's ticket on match day. This is a stark contrast to the Premier League, where fans benefit from a £30 cap, despite it being a higher level of competition.
For a league at the sixth tier of English football, such pricing is not only exorbitant but also a significant barrier that can deter the passionate away fans who make exhaustive 190+ mile round trips to support their teams. Football should unify us, not challenge our financial capacity.
Therefore, I am proposing a crucial price cap of £20 for National League North and South match day tickets. This measure will ensure that football remains a sport for everyone, maintaining its status as 'the beautiful game' that is accessible to fans from all walks of life.
Moreover, we need to address the unfair practices of charging away fans more than home fans, as well as higher prices for seated sections when standing terraces are unavailable. Additionally, matchday prices should remain consistent, preventing clubs from raising prices on the day of the match itself. These practices undermine the spirit of the game and penalize loyal supporters who travel great distances.
So, to summarise, what I am proposing is, legislation that includes:
- A £20 price cap on all match tickets, seated or terraced in the National League North & South. (This obviously doesn't include hospitality tickets)
- Stop clubs being able to charge away fans more than home fans.
- Stop clubs charging away fans more for "seated" sections, when they don't open the standing/terrace sections.
- Stop ticket prices increasing on matchday.
Implementing these measures will not only ensure fair pricing but will also promote a more inclusive and egalitarian environment, where fans can continue to support their teams without financial strain. It is high time we make the sport about fair play both on and off the field.
I urge you to support this petition to introduce a fair and equitable ticket pricing system for all National League North and South supporters. By signing this petition, you can help preserve the accessibility of football matches and ensure the loyalty of its true supporters is appropriately recognized. Please, sign and share this petition to bring about necessary changes that will keep our beloved sport fair and accessible.
