Introduce a 20mph speed limit and speed bumps in Hellesdon
The Issue
These lanes alone provide access to Hellesdon Mill Meadow which borders the River Wensum, as well as vicinity to Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Sweet Briar Marshes; such natural features of the landscape provide a peaceful and safe setting for children, families, pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and local wildlife. The current speed limit of 30mph poses a risk to not only local residents but greater public safety; data shows that a person struck at 30mph is roughly 5 times more likely to die than if hit at 20mph.
I have personally witnessed collisions due to excessive speeds. Details of the most recent collision can be obtained from the Environment Agency who have consequently suffered structural damage to their fencing that protects the weir at Hellesdon Mill.
We believe that reducing vehicle speeds and introducing suitable traffic-calming measures would improve safety and quality of life for the local community.
Families should not have to fear for their child's life as they walk down the road to access the public meadow. And no vulnerable road user should feel unsafe on a residential country lane.
