We call upon the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to publicly denounce the continued push for expansion of Australia’s Fossil Fuel Industry. While acknowledging that Climate Change is the greatest threat to the long term survival of the reef, The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is failing to take practical action to combat this. As the principle government funded agency for ensuring the future survival of the Great Barrier Reef “through funding of solutions grounded in science” and ” to ensure it effectively contributes to the long-term sustainable management of the Great Barrier Reef”  they have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that all possible actions are being taken to address the most urgent threat to our greatest National and World Heritage environmental  icon and that is “Climate Change”. The opening up of the Gallilee Basin Carbon Bomb, one of the worlds biggest deposits of low grade thermal coal and the push for massive expansion of the gas fracking industry are death warrants for the reef. Indeed the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority states “Mitigating human-induced climate change through effective emissions reduction and decarbonising the global economy remains the most urgent and critical need for the Great Barrier Reef’s future, irrespective of the success or otherwise of restoration and adaptation interventions being considered for the Reef.”                                                                                                                                  The Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the principle agency for reef protection is ignoring this and instead investing in pseudo science like cloud brightening to combat warming of the oceans that is killing the reef through coral bleaching.
