When Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics, International Olympic Committee members claimed that the Games would help to improve human rights in China. However this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Since the 2008 Games, China’s aggressive and unrelenting crackdown against freedom and human rights has doubled. For Tibetans every inch of their life is under siege. Simply expressing the desire for freedom or possessing a picture of the Dalai Lama can result in torture and imprisonment.

In the last five years there has been a surge of resistance with demonstrators calling for freedom in Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama. China’s response to such protests has been brutal, and fatal, with reports of armed police attacking and beating demonstrators and, in a number of cases, opening fire, killing peaceful protesters and seriously injuring many more.

To award Beijing another Olympic Games, in the knowledge of the ongoing serious abuses, is akin to saying that torture and repression are acceptable to the world community. The IOC must not treat China’s human rights record and actions in Tibet as an unfortunate but irrelevant detail in assessing whether Beijing hosts another Games.

Act Now! Urge the International Olympic Committee to stand on the right side of history. Tell the IOC that China doesn’t deserve another Olympic Games.
