Under Putin's watch, Russia has sent the world back into a more dangerous age. Daily civilians are massacred in Ukraine by forces he denies are there. At least one passenger jet has been shot down by forces armed by his regime. Even today we see civilians on a bus massacred in cold blood with weapons he has provided and evidence he has planned this campaign for some months. His own population live in fear of being arrested for any expression of free speech. He is a war criminal who deserves the harshest penalty that the international community can impose.

Zakharchenko has played Karadzic to Putin's Milosevic, an on the ground menace organising forces which in the past few days have carried out increasing attrocities- shooting of prisoners, use of poison gas- many incidents which on their own would merit a war crimes trial. We should not hesitate to put them on trial.
