Wild Card Entry for Neeraj Chopra in Rio Olympics 2016

Wild Card Entry for Neeraj Chopra in Rio Olympics 2016

The Issue

This is a petition to Sebastian Coe, President of IAAF for a wild card entry of Neeraj Chopra in Rio Olympics 2016 in the athletic discipline of Javelin throw.

Neeraj Chopra recently broke the world record in U-20 category with a throw of 86.48m. This was achieved on 23 July 2016 in IAAF U-20 world championships. To put the magnitude of his achievement in perspective, Chopra’s throw put’s him eighth amongst all throwers this year. It also puts him ahead of defending Olympic gold medalist Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, whose best this year is 86.35m. Indeed Chopra’s effort is better than Walcott’s Olympic winning mark of 84.58 back at the 2012 London Games.

The deadline for qualifying for Rio Olympics was 11 July 2016. Neeraj was was not able to pass the 83.00 m mark require to qualify for Olympics by the above deadline. But considering his age and the monumental effort he put to break the world record is an achievement in itself. The athlete currently is in form of his life and if given a chance will be able to test himself against the best in the world and considering his current ranking can easily break into the last 8.

Olympic is a competition where best in the world showcase themself and Neeraj has certainly proved that he is one of the best upcoming athlete. As per AFI president Adille Sumariwalla, who is also a member of IAAF Council, Neeraj can be considered for a wild card entry. On behalf of entire India we request you to provide a deserving candidate like Neeraj an entry into the grand event instead to the athletes who have not proven themselves on such a big stage.
